Michael Gove's false understanding of a trade deal in the event of a Brexit.
Déclaration
Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Justice, representing the leave campaign, presented his arguments for a trade deal in the event of a Brexit. He claimed:
“There is a free trade zone stretching from Iceland to turkey that all European nations have access to…after we vote to leave we will remain in this zone.”
He argued the advantages this brings are full access to the European market without being tied to EU regulation.
Erreur
Such a trade deal is proved to be almost impossible. The European market he envisages has at its core the ‘single market’ of 28 member states of the EU. Surrounding this we see the European economic area and multiple bilateral agreements between the EU and countries such Turkey which faciliate trade. In these agreements, many EU regulations and the acceptance of some of its freedoms; the free movement of goods, services, people and capital is required. In order to gain full access without EU regulation, the UK would need to come to an agreement with the EU, the EEA and countries outside the EU such as Switzerland. It is nearly impossible that such agreements could be made without the inclusion of principles such as the free movement of people or the involvement of EU regulation.
